HOLLYWOOD — There are press conferences, and then there are press conferences. The difference between the two is a lot greater than just some lousy italics.

Take, for example, the VMA presser that took place Thursday (September 4) on the Paramount Studios backlot. At first, it seemed to be another media gathering, complete with the usual sights (spazzy reporters, grumpy camera guys, a dude dressed up like a ninja who asked stupid questions in a faux-gruff tone) and sounds (plenty of ear-shattering microphone feedback, people complaining about the heat).

But as soon as things got rolling, it became clear that this was no ordinary press call: This was the 2008 Video Music Awards press conference, and it was an italicized event, for sure.

Right out of the gate, VMA host Russell Brand — looking resplendent in a black vest and super-tight trousers — made sure of that, welcoming the media to what he promised to be a “bloody exciting” event, and got his P.T. Barnum on, touting some of the big things show producers have planned for this Sunday, including a performance by “God’s favorite virgins, the Jonas Brothers,” which he proclaimed to be so excellent that “it will make the concept of an afterlife seem tame by comparison.”

As he continued with the hyperbole, a lengthy black limousine suddenly appeared on the scene, and out of it stepped none other than Christina Aguilera — looking svelte in some majorly high heels — who slinked to the microphone and purred that on show night, she’ll be performing her brand-new single, “Keeps Getting Better,” which is also the name of a best-of album she’s releasing in November.

“You’re going to get a first look and a first listen at my new image and my new sound,” she said. “The last album, the style and sound was about vintage glam — this one is all about the future.”

Aguilera then joked that this would be the first time her son Max, born in January, would be able to watch her perform on TV, to which Brand — still in full-on hype mode — shouted, “The VMAs are going to be so great that Christina Aguilera is willing to risk her newborn baby’s sight!”

While Brand was still shouting, a second surprise guest made his presence known. Appearing on a fire escape adjacent to the conference — we were in the “New York City” backlot, BTW — T.I. grabbed the microphone and announced that he was coming down to make a special announcement of his own.

After descending on a rickety metal ladder — at one point, his microphone tumbled out of his back pocket and landed on the street below — the rapper strode up next to Brand and Aguilera, posed for some photos and then broke the news that he, too, would be debuting a new song (from his forthcoming LP, Paper Trail) on the big show, this one a duet with none other than .

“The people can expect action-packed pandemonium from top to bottom,” he said, before turning to Brand and adding, “Those are some impressive pants you’ve got there. Are they denim? I thought they were spray-on aerosol.”

Aguilera and T.I. then departed, leaving Brand to make even more VMA announcements, including news that in the first 30 minutes of the show, fans can expect appearances by Britney Spears, Rihanna, Pete Wentz, and performances by the Jonas Brothers (to be introduced by Taylor Swift), Rihanna and Katy Perry, who will apparently be trying her hand at replicating .

Google to Microsoft: Game On

The “browser wars” should be renamed the “browser battles.”In its boldest move yet to secure tech dominance on the internet, Google today released a Web browser aimed squarely at the market dominated by Microsoft—but the bigger target is the operating system, and Microsoft’s Office software suite, a cash cow for Microsoft totaling $15 billion.”Google really believes that the internet is the new operating system,” said Danny Sullivan, editor in chief of Search Engine Land, a technology news and analysis website. “Google wants to provide the applications that people use on the Web, and the best way to do that is to make them compatible with its own browser.”This new battleground is much broader than others over internet software—including search—because it is a war for control over computer software, and suggests that Google’s larger target is Microsoft Office, and even Windows itself.But unlike the Windows or Vista operating systems, a Google operating system is expected to be one native to the Web, instead of residing on individual computer desktops.Some experts believe that Chrome, when combined with Google’s growing suite of Web-based applications, including Gmail and Google Docs, could pose a challenge to Microsoft’s domination of computer operating systems and its highly profitable Office software suite.”Chrome is a double threat to Microsoft,” said Sullivan. “It’s not just about the browser threat to Internet Explorer. It reinforces the threat to Microsoft on the application front as well.”

In a blog post, Sundar Pichai, a Google vice president for product management, sought to portray Chrome as not just a browser, “but also a modern platform for webpages and applications.”Prior to the advent of “always connected” broadband internet, most computer software was either for offline use, like word processing and spreadsheets, or for online use, like Web browsers. But Google is clearly pushing for a new model, one that integrates all software into a Web-based platform centered around a Web browser.Google is not so much trying to replace Microsoft Windows as render the traditional idea of the desktop-based operating system obsolete, a vision it can’t realize as long as Microsoft controls the Web-browser market with Internet Explorer.Although Google dominates Web search, one of the most basic internet functions, it has not yet found a way to crack the stranglehold Microsoft has long held on the browser market with Internet Explorer, which owns 75 percent market share. Google has tried to parry Microsoft’s dominance by supporting Firefox, the open-source browser, but Chrome represents a new, frontal assault on Internet Explorer.Microsoft, fresh off its stinging failure to acquire Yahoo as a way to attack Google’s search position, isn’t sitting on its hands.Just last week, Microsoft released Internet Explorer 8, which includes a feature that makes it harder for websites—including Google (and Microsoft)—to track users’ activities, a potential threat to Google’s highly profitable targeted advertising. In a statement, Microsoft responded to the release of Chrome.”The browser landscape is highly competitive,” said Dean Hachamovitch, Microsoft’s general manager for Internet Explorer, “but people will choose Internet Explorer 8 for the way it puts the services they want right at their fingertips, respects their personal choices about how they want to browse, and, more than any other browsing technology, puts them in control of their personal data online.”Google’s entry into the Web-browser market has been widely anticipated.As Google has matured, its torrid growth rate has slowed, putting the company under pressure to find new sources of revenue. Irene: My inspiration for a cake design comes from the bride and the style or theme of her wedding. Has she chosen formal or informal, structured or a bit wild? Then I use particulars from her dress, invitations, linens, floral design or life style.

TBC: What is the best part about your job?

Irene: I love to hear from the bride and groom that the cake was a “perfect fit” for their wedding and how much the guests also enjoyed it. I also love cake batter!

TBC: What has been the highlight of your career to date?

Irene: WOW, every “baking” day is a highlight, I just love making cakes that makes people happy and I’m happy that they chose me. But earning first place at The Mid Atlantic Cake Show in my first cake competition last year was really exciting and being chosen by People Magazine for their 1st Wedding Issue as the best designer in Vermont was great too!

TBC: What are the most popular flavors among your clients?

Irene: Chocolate takes the cake! Actually, White Chocolate with Raspberries and Lemon Ginger Butter Cream is a big favorite.

TBC: What are some of the questions that you ask a bride during the initial interview that helps you decide on the design of her wedding cake?

Irene: I ask if there are any details that she has already thought about incorporating into the design of her cake…i.e. the dress details, invitation details, colors. Does she want the same design on each tier or different? Shape of cake she is attracted to? Style and theme of the reception…traditional, contemporary, country or whimsical?

Irene: Brides should plan on booking their wedding cake 6 months before her wedding or as soon as she has chosen the designer.

TBC: What details of the wedding play an important part of the design of the cake?
